A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin recently shared the one thing she’d change about her amazing and legendary epic book series, and it’s something every fan would want to change!
Martin recently appeared at the Oxford Writers’ House to discuss A Song of Ice and Fire and writing in general, and at one point was asked what element of one of his books he would change if given the opportunity.
Martin replied, “I don’t know, I could probably change more than one thing. If I could change one thing about any of my books, I would finish them.”
The author went on to say that he envies authors who self-publish their books and don’t have to worry about deadlines, but ultimately said that he “wish I had finished it many years ago… that’s the biggest thing I think I would change.”
As you know, Martin has worked on Winter Winds for years… or he’s not working on it since he hasn’t finished it yet.
Damn, after he’s done with that he has to write the final book, A Spring Dreambut who knows if he will ever be able to finish it.
Martin has also previously spoken about the writing process The Winds of Wintersaying: “It’s a big, big book, I said that before. It’s a big book. It’s probably going to be a bigger book than any of the previous volumes in the series.
“Dance with Dragons AND Storm of Swords They are the two largest books in the series, they were both about 1,500 manuscript pages. I think this one will be longer when I finish reading it.”
Martin also spoke about how exhausting it was for him to have people asking him to finish the book, saying, “Yes, of course I’m still working on THE WINDS OF WINTER. I’ve said it a hundred times in a hundred places, and having to say it over and over again is just exhausting. I made a lot of progress on WINDS in 2020 and less in 2021… but ‘less’ is not ‘none.'”
We can only hope that he continues to push forward and makes further progress. Martin has a lot of projects in the works, but it doesn’t look like he’ll end up A Song of Ice and Fire it’s a priority.
