Martin Scorsese AND Leonardo DiCapriobook adaptation The Devil in the White City It’s one of those projects that I was anxiously waiting to see realized, but which apparently never manages to take off and go into production.
The series tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a demanding but visionary architect who embarks on a race to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H.H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the infamous ‘Murder Castle’ built in the shadow of the Exposition.”
actor was actually intended to star in the series as Burnham and Todd Field was on board to direct when it was created by Hulu. But everything fell apart and Hulu scrapped the project.
But the project is not dead! Producer Stacey Sher recently offered and updated Deadline saying: “I’m still involved. I never give up. It’s not imminent, but it’s never far from my mind. Rick [Yorn]Lion [DiCaprio]Jen [Davisson]and Mr. Scorsese; we’re all still involved.”
The series would have taken audiences on “a tour of murder, romance and mystery in the Golden Age.” Holmes admitted to killing 27 people, but in reality he is said to have killed around 200.
“He built the World’s Fair Hotel, an inn where people could stay during their travels, and the psychopath used his charming demeanor to lure guests to his hotel, which has since become known as the Murder Castle.
“The castle included a gas chamber, a crematorium and a dissecting table where he would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study. When Holmes was arrested, he told police:
“I was born with the devil in me. I could no more help being a murderer than the poet can help being inspired to sing. I was born with the ‘Evil One’ standing as my sponsor by the bedside where I was introduced to the world, and he has been with me ever since.”
My Friend Sam Shaw wrote the series and was supposed to be the showrunner. It’s nice to know that the production team hasn’t given up on the project and is still trying to make it happen.
This story is too interesting and crazy not to be turned into a series or a movie, so I hope it happens sooner or later.
