James Gunn recently offered an update on his Supermanand, in the meantime, suggests that, while there is still a long way to go to finish the film, reshoots may not be necessary.
A fan reached out to Gunn on Threads and asked him, “Would you also say you’re 98% done with Superman?”
Gunn responded by saying, “Hell no. Once you’re done shooting, you’re just getting started! There’s still a lot of editing, visual effects, sound and scoring to do!”
Most of these big-budget superhero movies go through reshoots. Marvel Studios and the previous DC regime have been notorious for reshoots, but Gunn doesn’t think that Superman he will need it.
He went on to explain his method for avoiding having to shoot more scenes:
1) Over-preparing
2) Don’t start filming until I have a finished script that my entire team is happy with.
3) Hire actors and department heads who I know can do their job
4) Surround myself with people who challenge me and not just say yes, sir.
5) Every day I ask myself: are there small imperfections in the script or in what we are shooting that could turn out to be huge when we edit the film?
6) 1 and 2 again!
Gunn gets it. He’s one of the few directors in Hollywood who truly understands that story matters and that a solid, completed script is a must before a film even begins shooting.
It seems so simple, yet most movie studios don’t work this way and that’s why so many movies struggle and fail to reach their true potential.
When Gunn wrapped production on the film, he said, “And that’s it. God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity and hard work brought this project to life.
“I decided to make a film about a good man in a world that isn’t always that good. And the goodness, kindness and love I encountered on set every day inspired me and pushed me forward when I felt too exhausted to go it alone.
“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It was an honor. The destination was Superman, but the journey was the hard work, the laughter, the emotions, the ideas and the magic we shared together on set, and for that I will be forever grateful.”
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way of life, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as antiquated.”
Superman even the stars David Corenswet like Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan like Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult like Lex Luthor; Nathan’s son like Green Lantern; Isabella Merced like Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; Maria Gabriella of Faria like Angela Spica, known as The Engineer; Sarah Sampaiolike Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore like Otis.
Superman will launch the theatrical portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
