Deadpool and Wolverine director by Shawn Levi recently spoke openly about bringing My First Encounter with Channing Tatum to finally play Gambit in a Marvel movie. Levy also revealed that he is one of the directors in the running to helm the Gambit solo film that was in development several years ago.
Tatum’s portrayal of Remy Lebeau was one of the highlights of the film: he played the character perfectly and in a very hilarious way.
Tatum appears in the film as part of a small team that also includes Wesley Snipe (Lama), actress Jennifer Garner (Electra), and Daphne Acute (X-23).
Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Deadpool (Reynolds) team up with them while they’re stranded in the Void to take on Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corrin) forces so they can escape and return home.
During an interview with the New York TimesLevy spoke about working with Tatum, revealing that the actor got emotional every day while filming his scenes.
Levy said: “Channing was visibly emotional every day on set. Sometimes it was in the form of smiling elation and sometimes it was tearful gratitude, but I have never seen an actor more grateful to be on set than Channing Tatum.
“I was one of dozens of directors who showed up for the interview to direct the film. Gambit film over a decade ago, and the first time Ryan and I pitched Kevin Feige [the Marvel Studios president] the idea, we had to explain it a little bit because this is not a point of arrival for a legacy: this is a zig when all the other characters were going in a zag.
“It also gave us the opportunity to go against the grain of the other characters, because Gambit’s experience is so different from all the other Legends.”
Ryan Reynolds also shared his gratitude towards Tatum along with some photos from the film. Reynolds said, “Gambit is a guy that Chan was born to play. His story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic book-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen.
“Remy LeBeau is grafted into his soul and he needs to come out and deal with it. And Gambit has found its author in Chan. He’s one of the coolest, smartest characters in comics and still largely unexplored.
“I want more, and from what I’ve seen in the theater, you do too. Having the chance to say goodbye to some of these heroes is just as important as having new characters to root for… and rooting for Gambit is easy.
“Rooting for Chan is even easier. He’s one of the greatest, hardest working, kindest people in the entire industry. I couldn’t be more excited to see @channingtatum bring Gambit back from the dead at the perfect time and in the perfect way. #Gambit”
While I would love to see Tatum as Gambit again, his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine is most likely a one-off, and we will probably never see him play Gambit again. It would be a pleasant surprise if he did, though!
