Shawn Levy Talks About His Goals for the STAR WARS Movie He’s Making

As director by Shawn Levi is riding the wave of Marvel’s success Deadpool and Wolverinehas another big film project in mind: the Star Wars movie he is developing for Lucasfilm.

We don’t know much about him. Star Wars film, but he has goals in mind for it, and he’s just trying to make a film that isn’t redundant with what’s been done in the past with the franchise. He’s trying to do something fresh and unique.

During a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, the director was asked what he loved about the franchise, and he replied:

“I will say that the experience of creating this story forced me to think about that question. Because there are only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline. … Because I don’t want to make a Star Wars movie that’s redundant with the other ones.

“Nor am I interested in making one that has to be used in another movie. I really wanted to create something that felt organic to me both in tone and in characters.”

It makes sense that the director would want to make a standalone Star Wars movie that doesn’t connect to anything else that’s been done. I think it’s cool and exciting to open up the universe and expand on telling new stories. It can work with a good story, writing, and direction.

Levy adds: “So I think there’s definitely the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves, and how that can make us powerful. Those themes, combined with visual pleasure and wish fulfillment, to me is Star Wars.”

Levy reunites with The Adam Project screenwriter My Friend Jonathan Tropper for the film. When he previously spoke about the opportunity to direct it, he said it was a “bucket list thing.”

Levy said: “Getting that call was a great day. I was in the editing room on All the Light We Cannot See, and I looked at my phone, and it was [Lucasfilm president] by Kathy Kennedy.

“So a conversation started that led to her inviting me to develop and make my own Star Wars movie. I’m putting everything I have into it, because I love that world and it’s a privilege to be part of that galaxy.”

Speaking previously about his excitement for the project, he said: “If you had told me when I was directing Big Fat Liar that one day I would be working on the biggest TV show in the world and directing Marvel followed by Star Wars, I would have said, ‘You’re fucking crazy.’ But it’s so exciting. And it’s the kind of big-canvas storytelling that I’ve always dreamed of doing.

“I was lucky because ironically it started with Night at the Museum, where you’re really building a world, and you’re incorporating comedy and heart. And you and I talked a lot, and that’s what I tried to do in Free Guy and Adam Project.

“And so to get the calls from both Marvel and Lucasfilm, it’s really gratifying. Because I’ve been doing this for a while and these are calls that I definitely hoped to get one day.

“And the fact that all of this is coming now and that these are the next few years of my life is just… I’m just excited. I don’t have any deeper words than that. I’m happy and excited every day.”

Levy also addressed others Star Wars projects that have been stuck over the years and, in this regard, he explained his attitude towards it.

He explained: “I have this golden ticket to a galaxy far, far away, and I’m going to devote myself to developing a script that gives me the privilege of making this film. I don’t get attached to things because they look good in a commercial.

“I get attached to the things I want to make. And you can be sure that I will not waste this wonderful opportunity. I will work my ass off. But first, I have to work my ass off to make Deadpool.

“So it’s definitely long-term planning, but I want to be one of the films that comes to the starting line because these are rare opportunities and I want to make the most of them.”

By Levy Star Wars the film is still a long way off, but it will be interesting to see what kind of story he manages to put together.
