Director My Friend Shawn Levi had a lot of ideas for characters and plots when it came to his recent Marvel blockbuster, Deadpool and WolverineHe is My name is Ryan Reynolds. They threw a lot of flak at it, but what stuck was the fantastic movie they produced, full of cameos and nods to the fans, all while telling a solid story.
One of those fun character cameos was done by Chris Evanswho we know in the MCU as Captain America, only this appearance was a callback to his pre-MCU role as Johnny Storm in the early Fantastic Four movie.
As for the difficulty in convincing Evans to do the raunchy post-credits scene we all loved, Levy enthuses about Evans’ process, recounting EW:
“We expected Chris to need a lot of takes because that was a page of super dirty language, at a thousand miles an hour. Chris came in, he was off script, he got it out in two takes, he cracked us up, and that’s what you see in the movie.
“I think Chris had a great time, and I know our movie benefits from Chris playing Johnny very differently than Cap. The nobility and cleanliness of Captain America is gone. This is a Johnny Storm inspired by Boston and Chris Evans.
“I feel like it’s more Chris than the original Chris Evans. Chris is a Boston guy. I should go back and watch the original. Fantastic Fourbut I don’t think he played Johnny like the Boston boy he did in Deadpool and Wolverine —and for me it’s perfection.”
Awesome! Evans was great in the movie, and it’s great that he had so much fun making it. Others who had fun making it were close to the whole Reynolds/Lively clan. My name is Ryan Reynolds.Wife of, actress Lively BlakeShe played the part of Lady Deadpool in the film, and two of their children played the roles of Kidpool and Babypool.
It was a family affair. But there was one guy that Levy and Reynolds had originally considered for the role of Kidpool, and Levy talked about that in the interview, saying:
“Self Scobell Walker had stopped evolving just before puberty, he would definitely be Kidpool. It was his dream. Ryan and I contacted him when we realized he would be too old, too tall, and too low-voiced.
“Puberty is what it is, and all the Hollywood dreams in the world can’t stop it. So we called Walker and explained why he couldn’t be Kidpool, and he was completely understanding.
“My long reunion hug with Walker at the New York premiere was one of my favorite moments of the entire evening.”
Walker Scobell has starred in Levy’s 2022 action-adventure film The Adam Project opposite Reynolds, so he was very close to the director and the star. It would have been fun if they had reunited in this film, but unfortunately time got the better of the young actor.
But everything went great, and Deadpool and Wolverine It’s one of the funniest shows you’ll see at the theater this year.
