Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A musical parody It is a parody of the stage reading of the classic 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factoryand the project involved two actors from the original film.
Julie Alba Cole (Veruca Salt), was “lured out of retirement” to narrate from August 9 to 18, and Paris Themes (Mike Teevee), will be speaking from August 19th to 26th.
Joining them is Patricia Patersonthe original cast member of the Glasgow Chocolate Experience disaster who the Internet dubbed Sad Oompa Loompa.
The ensemble cast includes Shelley Reigning (Pitch perfect series), Eric Petersen (School of Rock The Musical, Shrek: The Musical), Nicole Greenwood (In plain sight), Wilkie Ferguson (Motown on Broadway: The Musical), Cassandra Parker (Cabaret), Monica Evans (Singer/Composer), and Chris the bad guy (Monster Show).
The project was born from Richard Forge of Kraft-Engel Productions and director Andy Fickman (Heathers: The Musical). There is also talk of surprise guests.
The musical’s libretto will be written by Kraft and Fickman, who share a passion for musicals, dark showbiz references, and Gene Wilder.
Kraft said in a statement: “If you announce it, they will come. It wasn’t until March that I came up with the idea for a stage musical. I put out a press release before I did a show.
“Then a great team of great songwriters wrote our sixteen-song soundtrack. Then the perfect director, Andy Fickman, signed on.
“And now our dream cast has come together to premiere this crazy idea at the Edinburgh Fringe Fest. Not in my wildest imagination could I have imagined that this would all come together so beautifully and so quickly. It’s just exquisitely…
Andy Fickman adds: “I feel like Willy Wonka himself, standing at the factory gates, with this extraordinary cast arriving with their golden tickets ready to perform. Working with this glorious cast on this dream musical is already a joy, but adding the original Veruca Salt and Mike Teevee to the mix… my head is having a candy explosion!
The music for Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody will be created by Riki Lindhome, Daniel Mertzlufft, Doug Rockwell and Tova Litvin, Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, Megan Cavallari, Kate Miccuci, Jennifer Lucy Cook and Richard Kraft!
