When I was a kid watching cartoons and movies in the 80’s, there were a lot of quicksand themes in some of the stories. As a kid, it instilled in me the fear that one day I would be stuck in quicksand, fighting for my life.
We have a Weird History video you can watch today that explores quicksand and how it’s not all that dangerous. But it does include some real-life tragedies related to it.
A note accompanying the video reads: “The threat of quicksand, of slowly sinking into a gravelly sludge that fills your lungs, is inextricably linked to our DNA.
“Or so it seems. Quicksand has been around since at least the 1950s, when adventure stories took place in mysterious jungles and deserts.
“While those stories fell out of fashion, quicksand narratives continued to proliferate thanks to Disney.”
I actually know someone who was driving his Jeep and got caught in quicksand, which is pretty wild. So, it can be a real threat… rare, but real.
