COBRA KAI co-creator says there have been talks about stories centered around a young Mr. Miyagi

Co-creators Josh Faulty, By Jon HurwitzAND Hayden Schlossberg brought the series Cobra Kai to life in such a way that only fans of the Karate Kid that franchising could do.

These guys created stories and characters based on the characters and lore we already knew and loved, taking us back and moving the story forward.

We got a lot of nods to the fandom in the form of recurring characters from the movies and Easter eggs that harked back to the stories we grew up with.

One character they paid special attention to in the series is Mr. Miyagi, the star of the films, who was Daniel’s loving and wise sensei and mentor as he grew up.

Actor Miyagi Pat Morita He passed away in 2005 and the series has paid tribute to his memory and character in many special ways.

But that doesn’t mean we’ll never see his character return in one way or another. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Heald explained:

“We discussed it. I don’t think we would ever remake Miyagi if we looked at Miyagi at the age of Pat Morita. You know, our minds, they go crazy. We like to think about who Mr. Miyagi was a hundred years ago.

“Everyone knows the story that Miyagi tells in The Karate Kid: Part Two, about his coming of age, and about Sato. So it’s not outside the realm of possibility that we would want to maybe explore different eras of Mr. Miyagi at some point in this franchise, with a different performer.”

He went on to talk about the idea that there is a right way and a wrong way to revisit the beloved character:

“I think we personally stumble upon the idea of going back to a timeline that overlaps with when Daniel knew Miyagi, and doing it with anyone other than Pat.

“We’ve been very careful in the series so far about using footage and shooting: there was a scene where I shot Miyagi from behind when he first built the courtyard. But to turn around and (show) the face, it has to be a different era, or it should be Pat.

“It should look like Pat. It should sound like Pat. It would be a hindrance, I think, for people to say, ‘OK, this is 1986, and this is not really what I remember.'”

I have no idea what the future holds for the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai universe. The creators have been open about the fact that they have not closed the door to future spin-offs within this world.

This series has been truly amazing, I can’t wait to see how this final chapter ends, and I know this trio won’t be moving forward unless they have a really great idea on their hands.

Cobra Kai will begin its final season on Netflix on July 18.
