Fans of Gilligan wins they’re about to dive into something disturbing. The first full trailer of Pluribusthe upcoming Apple TV+ series from breaking Bad AND Better call Saulo creator, has fallen and is giving off some seriously creepy vibes.
The show was shrouded in mystery, teased only through cryptic footage and an ominous exchange with the President. But this new trailer gives us our best look yet, revealing a chillingly twisted world where everything seems perfect… except it absolutely isn’t.
Apple TV+ describes the series simply as: “The unhappiest person on Earth must save the world from happiness.”
That “most miserable person” happens to be Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehornwho reunites with Gilligan once again following their acclaimed run Better call Saulo. Carol seems to be the only person on Earth who isn’t blissfully happy, and that’s a problem.
The trailer shows a disturbingly cheerful humanity, obsessed with making sure Carol joins them in their unceasing joy, no matter what it takes.
The footage sets a disturbing tone. The streets are littered with signs of catastrophe with burnt out cars, ambulance lights flickering in smoke and the haunting image of smiling citizens sorting out the aftermath as if everything was perfectly normal.
Everywhere Carol goes, people turn to look at her, their smiles never wavering, their eyes too bright. It’s that perfect blend of the familiar and the terrifying that Gilligan does so well. The X-Files side of him will definitely come out in this series.
Even though the trailer shows us more than all the previous teasers, Pluribus still keeps its secrets. There is no clear explanation as to what caused this “happiness epidemic,” and that’s exactly what makes it so interesting.
It feels like another masterclass in tension from a storyteller who has made a career out of exploring human nature when pushed to its limits.
Pluribus will premiere on Apple TV+ on November 7, debuting with a two-episode premiere.
