A report has emerged that states that Dr Brendan Gleeson (Banshee of Inisherin) has joined Nicholas Cage in Sony Pictures’ live-action film Spider-Man Noir series.
The news comes from insider Daniel Richtman, who also claims that Gleeson will play the role of a villain in the story.
There’s no information to share about who Gleeson might play, but Spider-Man Noir has faced multiple Noir-style versions of every classic Spider-Man villain. So, it’s hard to guess who he might play.
The series will follow the story of an “aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York City, forced to confront his past life as the city’s only superhero.”
It was previously reported that the series would be set in a standalone universe and that the main character would not be Peter Parker.
In this noir-inspired world, Peter Parker takes on the comic book persona of Spider-Man, but with a decidedly cool twist. Dressed in a trench coat and fedora, Spider-Man Noir fights crime in the shadows of New York City, navigating a landscape filled with corruption and danger.
The character’s design and narrative draw heavily from the noir genre, incorporating elements of detective fiction and a morally ambiguous atmosphere. Throughout his adventures, Spider-Man Noir faces off against a rogue’s gallery of villains.
Speaking previously about playing the character, Cage said, “It’s no secret that I love the character.” He also described the character as a “kind of mash-up,” one that was inspired by Golden Age actors like by Edward G. Robinson, James CagneyAND Prince Humphrey Bogart.
The actor said: “I can combine my favorite performances from the golden age, namely Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character who is, I think, widely regarded [to be] Stan Lee’s masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash-up of, in a way, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, a mash-up of Bogart and Cagney.
The project is developed by The Punisher writer and producer Steve Lightfoot as co-showrunner and is joined by Oren Uziel, who is one of the authors of the project and will collaborate with Lightfoot as co-showrunner. Harry Bradbeer will be executive producer and director of the first two episodes.
Which Spider-Man villain would you like Gleeson to play?
