Technological advances in the world are getting weirder and weirder! A team of scientists led by Michio Kawai of the University of Tokyo and Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have created a smiling robotic face made from living human cells.
The whole thing gives off creepy, unsettling vibes, but the study aims to develop a “living skin” model of cells to cover humanoid robots and allow them to have real emotional reactions and communicate more clearly.
The description reads: “A smiling face made of living human skin could one day be attached to a humanoid robot, allowing machines to emote and communicate more realistically, researchers say. Its wrinkles could also prove useful for industry cosmetics”.
The scientists explain: “In this study, we develop and characterize piercing-type anchors inspired by the structure of skin ligaments as a technique to effectively adhere skin equivalents to robotic surfaces.”
