Duffer Brothers Reveal STRANGER THINGS Cast Was ‘Too Emotional’ While Filming Finale: ‘You Shouldn’t Be Angry!’

The emotional weight of the conclusion Stranger things ended up hitting both the cast and creators harder than expected.

As the beloved Netflix series nears its epic conclusion with its fifth season, Opaque AND Ross Duffer revealed that filming the last few episodes was so intense that they had to remind the actors not to get too emotional while filming the final scenes, at least not yet.

“It was hard to even get through take after take,” Ross Duffer told Variety, recalling how difficult it was to shoot scenes that should have been lighter.

“You’re just saying, ‘They feel every moment of this.’ Sometimes they were really too emotional at times when it was a little too early for the scene. We say, ‘You shouldn’t be angry!’”

The fifth and final season of Stranger things promises to deliver a heavy dose of angst and high-stakes action as Eleven, Will and the gang face Vecna for one final showdown. But behind the camera, emotions were already pouring in long before the final episode concluded.

Maya Hawkewho plays Robin Buckley, reflected on how much the experience changed her as an artist. “I think it changed me forever as an actor,” he said.

“I’m a different actor today, and I think I’m a better actor, because of the opportunity to do a scene that took place on a high-emotional-risk day in my life, which was also a high-emotional-risk scene. It was just an extraordinary gift. But I spent 12 hours in a continuous cycle of crying.”

Joe Keerywho plays fan favorite Steve Harrington, shared a similar sentiment about the long and emotional shoot.

“Everyone was feeling the strain of filming for a year,” he said. “Everyone couldn’t wait to finish, but then once you get to the finish line, you look back and think, ‘Oh man, can I have another one?’”

Matt Duffer admitted that saying goodbye after spending a decade on the series was harder than expected. “I don’t think I’ll ever spend 10 years on something again where you become this sort of family with the people who work on it,” he said.

“It was really hard. Every day meant saying goodbye. Each of those actors only had to say goodbye once. Ross and I had to do it four different times. Each time I thought, ‘I’m not going to break!’ And I broke down every time.

According to the official synopsis of Stranger things 5,”Scarred by the opening of the Rifts, our heroes are united by a single goal: to find and kill Vecna. But he is missing: his whereabouts and plans are unknown. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar terror.

“The final battle is imminent, and with it, a darkness more powerful and deadlier than anything they have ever faced before. To end this nightmare, they will need everyone, the entire group, to be together, one last time.”

Volume 1 of Stranger Things 5 will premiere on November 26th, followed by volume 2 on December 25th and the final volume 3 on December 31st. Get ready, because it looks like this farewell to Hawkins will be as emotional for fans as it was for the cast and crew who brought him to life.
