Director Ridley Scott and his production company Scott Free are developing a feature film based on TheCirque du Soleil’s aquatic show of the same name. The circus group is launching its own entertainment studio and has hired former CBS and WWE executive Susan Levison to run it.
The studio’s new division is designed to produce long-form content based on Cirque du Soleil’s DNA and intellectual property. The company was founded in 1984 and is behind shows such as Mystery, Ka, Corteo, The Beatles Love AND Crazy Apple.
Levison, who previously served as executive vice president and head of WWE Studios, came from CBS Studios, where he served as senior vice president of alternative programming, and now becomes general manager of TV and film.
He will oversee programming for unscripted and scripted television, film, animation and documentaries.
“I am thrilled to join the vibrant and talented team at Cirque du Soleil at such an exciting time of growth and transformation. We intend to leverage our extensive IP library to create television and film projects that surprise and delight our audiences,” said Levison.
The is his first project to be unveiled with Scott developing it as a feature film. The show, which takes place at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, takes place above a 1.5 million gallon pool of water and features synchronized swimming in the theater, which is designed to resemble a 14th-century European opera house.
Cirque Du Soleil Studio will produce with Scott Free Productions.
