Creative Director at Pixar Studio, Pete Doctor, is rejecting the idea of live-action remakes, a recent craze from its sister studio, Disney. In a recent interview with Time, the director discussed how crucial the success of Inside out 2 it’s for the future of the animation studio.
“Self [Inside Out 2] it’s not good in the theater, I think it just means we’re going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business.
Docter was asked about a viral campaign to run for fans Ratatouille in a live-action film, and explained that this is something he doesn’t even want to consider.
“No, and this might kick me in the ass for saying it, but it kind of bothers me. I like to make films that are original and unique. To do it again, it’s not very interesting to me personally.
Docter said making a live-action film about a mouse “would be difficult” and added: “So much of what we create only works because of the rules of the world.” [animated] world.” He continued:
“So if you see a human being walking into a houseboat, your mind thinks, ‘Wait a second. Wait. The houses are super heavy. How do balloons lift the house?’ But if you have a cartoon character and it’s sitting there in the house, you say, “Okay, I’ll buy it.” The worlds we’ve built simply don’t translate very easily.
He’s right. It would be a nightmare to try to do it again History of the toy OR Monsters Inc. in live-action format. I just can’t imagine they would have the same appeal as their animated originals.
Docter directed and wrote the 2015 episodes In reverse with the sequel directed by Kelsey Mann. The animated sequel features a voice cast that includes Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane LaneAND Kyle MacLachlan.
Inside out 2 debuts in theaters on June 14th. I got to see a preview of the movie and it’s a lot of fun!
