AWESOME about Disneyland! The show returns this week a year after its giant dragon caught fire

Disneyland’s popular and spectacular show Fantasmic! returned this week, nearly a year after it was shut down due to a fire that engulfed the attraction’s giant dragon. The show will include a “reimagined battle scene between the sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent,” according to the park. It no longer includes the dragon.

Fantastic! has been officially on hiatus since July 2023, two months after a fire broke out during a show and burned the dragon Maleficent during the finale.

The Anaheim Fire Department responded and all Disney guests and employees were safely evacuated from the area. No injuries were reported. Park officials have temporarily suspended fire effects similar to those used in Fantasmic! in selected shows around the world.

“In the reimagined battle scene between sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent, Mickey summons all of his magical powers, creating colorful swirls of light as sparkling pyrotechnics shoot out from his fingers,” according to a statement from the park. “Clothed in her dark dress with her mighty scepter in hand, Maleficent rises to a height of 35 feet as she appears to set the rivers of America ablaze.”

The original Phantom! the show opened in Frontierland in 1992 and featured fireworks, various Disney characters, live actors, water effects, pyrotechnics, lasers, music, audio-animatronics, projectors, decorated boat floats, and projections on nebulized screen.

The show entered Mickey’s imagination as he battled various Disney villains, including Maleficent in her dragon form, standing approximately 45 feet tall.

Disneyland officials said the revamped show retains the original premise — minus the dragon — and “brings the iconic Peter Pan scene back to life and introduces the Lost Boys as they join Peter Pan and Wendy to battle Captain Hook on a pirate ship coming into view on the Rivers of America. They perform an extraordinary series of duels and spectacular falls during this swashbuckling sequence.”

I love Phantom! much. As a teenager I had a pass, worked at Disneyland, and always loved having the chance to see the show. It’s a shame that Maleficent’s dragon didn’t get to be resurrected, but I’m sure the new show will be just as great.
