Stephen Sommersthe director of horror adventure films The Mummy AND The mummy returns was “insulted” by Tom Cruise’s reboot, and explained why in a recent interview.
During a recent interview with THR, the director questioned whether the studio had contacted him before moving forward with the reboot, and he said, “No.”
He went on to explain why he was insulted by this, saying, “Actually, I was a little insulted because the writers and director [Alex Kurtzman] than Tom Cruise’s, no one has ever contacted me. I contact people if I want to take over someone’s things. The third, which rob [Cohen] direct, he’s a bit like my baby.”
He continued, “I didn’t want to step on their toes, so I helped produce it. But I had nothing to do with Tom Cruise’s. They never contacted me or called me. I was doing other things, and it’s not like I sat down to cry, I just think it’s common courtesy.”
I intend, The Mummy It’s not really a Sommers thing. Sure, he directed those two Mummy movies, but Universal Picutes owns it and they can do whatever the hell they want with it.
Also, Crusie’s The Mummy it was a complete reboot and was in no way connected to what Sommers did, so why would he be involved? Universal was clearly trying to do something different and fresh with the franchise, but it didn’t work.
Sommers should count his blessings that he wasn’t in that movie! But, if Universal ever decides to make another one of those Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser, then yeah, call Simmers!
When he previously spoke about the possibility of reprising his role as Rick O’Connell, the director said he had not been involved in any talk of a possible revival.
He said: “All the people at Universal are new after I left. I don’t really know them and they haven’t contacted me, so I don’t know what’s on their minds.
He added: “At the same time, it should be something really special. Of course, I would work with all those actors again.”
Sommers also reflected on how to help make it happen Dwayne Johnson a star choosing him as The Scorpion Kingsaying, “He was amazing. I had never heard of that guy, but then they sent me some footage of him, and he was just perfect. I had to shoot with him so quickly because he flew to Marrakesh on Wednesday, and he had to be in Saturday Detroit for something with WWE.”
He continued: “But boy, he was a trooper. As soon as the studio saw the dailies, the president of Universal called me and said, ‘You’ve got to write a movie for him.’ Somehow, over the next week, I came up with this idea that became the movie The Scorpion King.”
It is currently unknown what Universal has planned for the future The Mummy franchising.
