Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard he will not return to helm the next chapter of the franchise for Legendary Entertainment.
THR reports that “the split is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues.” The door is also said to remain open for his return for future installments.
Winger directed the last two films and has said he wants to direct another one that will close out the MonsterVerse trilogy. So, that third film of his will just have to wait, if he ever decides to return.
I’ve never cared much for Wingard’s Godzilla films, but they’re studio films so it doesn’t matter who they call to direct the next one, it’s going to be more of the same unless a strong director comes along with a badass vision that I’m willing to fight for. For.
Recently hired Legendary Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe Dave Callaham to begin work on a script for the next Godzilla film, but there are no details on the story or what it will explore.
Wingard, however, is walking away from the franchise on a positive note. Even though he wasn’t interested in the movie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is on its way to becoming the highest grossing film of the five MonsterVerse films that have been released.
Wingard has a few projects that he has developed over the years, including a ThunderCats film, an adaptation of Metal Gear Solidand an action film titled Assaultwhich will most likely be his next film.
What do you think of Wingard’s exit from the franchise?
