Review: THE MOVIE GARFIELD is a fun new take on the classic fan-favorite character

I have to take the family to an advance screening of The Garfield Movie hero Chris Pratt like the lasagna-loving cat we grew up with. I was used to reading Jim Davis’s Garfield comic in weekend comics as a kid, and I grew up watching the TV series Garfield and friendsso I’ve always been a fan.

It seems like a lot of the characters we grew up with have been rehashed in one way or another in recent years, so I went into this movie with low expectations.

First of all, the voice cast was perfectly cast, with Pratt perfectly matched as the lazy feline foodie. He’s played several animated characters in the last couple of years, but this was one of the best matches.

It was joined by Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecilia Forte, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, Bowen YangAND Snoop Dogg.

Each actor was funny and added their own touch to each character. The film featured an all-new origin story for Garfield and an adventure to escape a new nemesis and discover Garfield’s father while making friends along the way. The film provided plenty of laughs for all ages and didn’t go overboard to pander to any age group.

We all laughed and enjoyed the silliness. There was also a mid-credits scene with funny cat videos, and a post-credits homage to Jim Davis’ comic were both fun little surprises.

This was a solid family film and great fun at the movies.
