Martin Freeman defends his film MILLER’S GIRL over his controversial age difference with Jenna Ortega

The controversial drama Miller’s girlfriend was released last January to a mixed bag of reviews from fans and critics, which mostly ended up in the unexceptional category.

The film was about the budding inappropriate relationship between a teacher, played by Martin Freemann (Sherlock, Fargo), and student, played by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.

The film’s synopsis reads: “A talented young writer (Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her professor (Freeman) assigns her a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web.

“As lines blur and their lives become intertwined, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves as they strive to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold dear.”

While some viewers may have felt the film took the subject matter too far, Freeman stands behind the story and described it in a recent interview as “adult and nuanced.”

In an interview with The Sunday Times, the British actor, 52, said the film is not intended to glamorize the relationship between his characters and Ortega’s. “He’s not saying, ‘It’s not great,’” Freeman said. Reflecting that stories about difficult topics can be tainted by association, he added: “And that’s a shame.”

He then invoked Schindler’s List and said, “Are we going to have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a Holocaust movie?”

Yeah, it looks really different there, man. The Holocaust was a heinous historical event that everyone should know about. We’ve all seen your tired Lolita story time and time again, bro.

In February, the film’s intimacy coordinator, Kristina Arjona, said Ortega was “comfortable” with the material and actively involved in the performance.

Arjona told the Daily Mail: “There were many, many people throughout this process, who you interacted with [Ortega] to make sure it was consistent with what she felt comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do.

“I am extremely aware of my talent and make sure that we are constantly checking and that at no time are there any limits to them.”
