John Logan will write the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s BLOOD MERIDIAN for director John Hillcoat

John Logan (The Gladiator, The Aviator, Skyfall) is preparing to write the screenplay for the author’s film adaptation Cormac McCarthy’S Blood meridian for director John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless, Triple 9).

The story is based on historical conflicts along the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s and follows the journey of Kid, a 14-year-old from Tennessee, as he navigates the brutal and harrowing landscape of this new era.

The story takes place against the backdrop of Glanton’s gang’s ruthless pursuit of scalps and wealth as they rampage through the unforgiving landscapes of the American Southwest. The gang is hired by the Mexican government to exterminate Native Americans, but their bloodlust and greed soon transcend their initial mission.

Producer John Francis said in a statement: “It’s incredibly exciting to have John Logan on board. Very reassuring in the seemingly long list of good news regarding what was originally such an intimidating undertaking.”

Logan said: “Blood meridian has been one of my favorite novels since first reading it in 1985. It’s a majestic, beautiful, uncompromising book, and I’m thrilled to be able to help bring Cormac McCarthy’s dark masterpiece to the screen.

New Regency president and CEO Yariv Milchan and president of film and television Natalie Lehmann said in a joint statement: “Blood meridian is one of the most revered novels in American literature, by one of the greatest writers.

They added: “We knew we needed a very special talent to adapt this seminal book and John Logan was our first choice. His prolific talent and extraordinary track record consistently demonstrate his ability to transform beloved stories and lyrics into cinematic achievement.”

Hillcoat added: “After years of dreaming and planning the adaptation of this great work into a film, after years of discussing adaptation ideas with Cormac, we are thrilled to have writer John Logan stepping in with his passion and understanding of Cormac’s sensitivity, to help bring the film Blood Meridian to fruition.”

Blood meridian is considered by many to be one of the greatest American novels ever written, and the story is about the human scalp trade in the Southwest of the 1850s. It has been a very difficult film project for filmmakers to get off the ground over the years.

Speaking about adapting the story, Hillcoat previously said: “A book is a book and a movie is a movie. He understands that they are two different mediums, but the best thing you can do is capture the spirit of each.

“He started an adaptation himself. We talked about how to solve it, really, because it’s a very ambitious book to solve, as you can imagine.

This is a film project I’ve been dying to see come to fruition and the creative team behind it ensures it will be an amazing film!
