Drew Barrymore she has played so many memorable characters over the years, starting when she was a child ETover the past two decades, making his mark as a leading man in the romantic comedy genre.
One film that holds a special place in his heart, and that of fans, is the 1999 romantic drama. Never been kissed. Barrymore had a lot at stake with this film, as it was the first film he made with his production company, Flower Films, and he spoke about the stress and opinions of the studio in a recent interview on his show.
She explained:
“At the time, people were very tired of actors being producers. A lot of things didn’t necessarily work, and it didn’t mean that, being an actor, I knew how to produce the film. And it was about the economy. So if you didn’t make the movie work and produce it as an actor, you probably won’t be able to do it again.”
Barrymore said the pressure of acting and producing in the film made her “very stressed”, adding: “I was so scared during the whole film because I knew if it didn’t work, we wouldn’t get another chance.”
She said that although she had “so much fun shooting” the film, she had to “clench my stomach the whole time.”
“And I would get these calls from the studio and they would say, ‘I’m sorry, but you look really unattractive.’ Stop that.’ And I said, “Good.” And they said, ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ So I was also forced to tone it down a little because I had gone even further. Then they said something that appealed to my sensibilities rather than my ego. They said: “We don’t want you to lose heart because you are going so far with comedy.’ And I thought, ‘Great point.’ Let me backtrack a little bit.” And so Josie, what you see there, that’s me calling back and it came out and it worked. And we were really lucky and I’m very, very grateful and I would get around just going. I can’t believe this works. We’ll give it a second chance.”
Never been kissed was directed by Raja Gosnell and written by Abby Kohn AND Marc Silverstein. Barrymore co-starred with David Arquette, Michael Vartan, Leelee Sobieski, Jeremy Jordan, Molly Shannon, Garry Marshall AND John C. Reilly.
