Sylvester Stallone created one of the most beloved movie characters with Rocky Balboa in Rocky film franchise. So it was a no-brainer that after the first film, fans couldn’t wait to see the story continue with the next chapter Rocky II.
In a recent interview with Stallone and former nemesis/current friend Arnold Schwarzeneggertitled TMZ presents Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, IconsStallone spoke about the injury he suffered in preparation for his sequel and how it relates to Schwarzenegger.
At the time, both actors were using record-breaking strongman Franco Columbu as their trainer, and under his care, Stallone faced a devastating blow to his body. He explained:
“I have to talk to you about Frank. This guy here was very eccentric. We’re working out and he says, “Let’s have a bench press competition.” I said, “You win.” He says, “No, come anyway.” So I go down, and it’s maybe only 200, and I’m just [warming up] and I hear, “Pow!” I go “Ugh” and fall to the floor and go “Ahh” and then Franco says “Show me” and jams his fingers. I tore my pectoral off the bone. I mean, bad. I heard it tear and that’s when he got his fingers stuck. I think I’m going to pass out.”
This doesn’t seem like it could have been related to Schwarzenegger, as no one could have predicted that Stallone would tear his pectoral muscle, but some think that Arnold could have encouraged Columbus to push Stallone, with whom he was in a major feud at the time, beyond his breaking point.
Stallone went on to talk about how the injury affected the second film:
“So I’m going home. I feel like my career is over. I’m supposed to start Rocky II – directing, everything – in a month and a half. And I said I had to sew this thing up. Here’s the difference, e.g [Arnold] he would have done the same thing. I can’t use this arm, so I’ll change it to Rocky; he will fight with his right hand. Completely illogical, but I said ‘I’m not going to stop this movie just because of this.'”
Some fans say this wasn’t the best path for the character, but that’s all history now. The Rocky franchise was a success and Stallone and Schwarzenegger managed to reconcile, so that feels like a win to me.
