Colin Farrell is set to star in a new film project developed by Netflix titled The ballad of a little player. Edward Berger will direct the film from a screenplay written by Rowan Joffe.
The film is based on the novel by Lawrence Osborneand the story follows a high-stakes gambler who, after being tormented by his past and debts, decides to stay hidden in Macau and meets a kindred spirit who may hold the key to his salvation.
The book description offers some more detail. “As night falls on Macau and the neon signs lining the rain-soaked streets come to life, Doyle – ‘Lord Doyle’ to his fellow gamblers – descends on his favorite casino to try his luck at the baccarat tables that are l ‘still of its current existence.
“A corrupt English lawyer who escaped trial by fleeing to the East, Doyle spends his nights drinking and gambling and his days purging his excesses, continually haunted by his past. Taking refuge in a series of shady, dimly lit hotels, he watches his fortune rise and fall as the cards decide his fate.
“In a moment of crisis he meets Dao-Ming, an enigmatic Chinese woman who appears to be a casino denizen just like him, and seems to offer him salvation in the form of both money and love. But as Doyle attempts to make a rare and true connection, everything he accepts as reality seems to slip out of his grasp.
The story is described as a “timeless tale, steeped in haunting suspense and rich atmosphere.”
Production on the film is expected to begin later this year and it looks like it will be another big project for Farrell to tackle. The actor continues to keep busy while working on the Apple TV+ noir series Sugar. By the end of the year, she did The Penguin coming out on Max.
Farrell is currently producing the Sony drama A big, bold and beautiful journey opposite to Margot Robbie.
