David Lynch hopes to direct his own animated film SNOOTWORLD, which he wrote with screenwriter EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

David Lynch hopes for his fairytale animated film project Snootworld from the ground even if Netflix recently “rejected” his proposal.

Lynch is considering directing the film, which he co-wrote Tim Burton collaborator Caroline Thompsonwho has previously worked on projects including The nightmare before Christmas, Edward scissor handsAND The Addams Family.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Lynch said, “I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots, but I was doing these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge.”

He added: “I met with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in supporting this project, so I pitched it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it.”

Speaking about the film, Lynch said: “Snootworld is kind of an old-fashioned story and animation today is more about superficial jokes. Old-fashioned fairy tales are considered whiny: apparently, people don’t want to see them. Now it’s a different world and it’s easier to say no than to say yes.”

It sounds like it would be an interesting film and is really different from anything we’ve seen Lynch do before. Thompson described the plot as “wacky”.

He continued to share insights into the story saying, “It takes my breath away how wacky it is. Snoots are these tiny creatures that have a ritual transition at the age of eight, at which time they become smaller and are sent away for a year to be protected.

It explains that: “The world goes into chaos when the story’s hero Snoot disappears into the carpet and his family can’t find him and enters a crazy and magnificent world.”

Well, that sounds like fun! It is also a film that the whole family can enjoy. Lynch said: “I like this story. It’s something that both children and adults can appreciate… I’ve never done actual animation, but with computers today you can do spectacular things.”

Lynch is currently looking for someone to finance the film, and I hope that happens. If Lynch doesn’t end up directing it, he hopes his daughter Jennifer can take it on. She’s a regular director on American Horror Story, but she has “so many things in the works that she ultimately thought it would be better for me or someone else to direct it.”

As for what Lynch does next, he played coy about what the project might be, saying, “I can’t talk about those things right now.”
