Former SWAMP THING showrunner talks James Mangold’s DCU movie

Former SWAMP THING showrunner talks James Mangold’s DCU movie

In 2019 there was a short-lived event Swamp thing series that DC Entertainment developed with James Wan. The series only lasted one season and it was truly amazing! But it was eventually cancelled. I remember the project went through some major production issues.

Swamp thing is about to undergo another reboot thanks to the manufacturer James Gunn and director James Mangold. Many fans are excited about this project, including the showrunner of the canceled series, Mark Verheiden.

During a recent interview with Multiverse of Color’s The Showrunner Whisperer podcast, Verheiden was asked about Swamp thing movie, and he said, “James Mangold, who is a great guy, is apparently working on a Swamp Thing movie, which is great.”

He went on to add, “He will give a great performance in the film. So hopefully this maybe gives way to darker characters [getting their own projects].”

The former Swamp thing The showrunner continued: “I’m really confident in what James Gunn will bring to the world. It seems like the old DC movies from the last regime maybe aren’t doing as well as they hoped, so maybe this new version… They’re talking about including darker characters [in the DCU]so that would be great.

Speaking previously about the film, the director teased his vision for the film, saying that it will be a standalone film which he describes as a “very simple, clean, gothic horror film.”

He explained: “Although I am sure of DC’s opinions Swamp thing as a franchise, I would see it as a very simple, clean, gothic horror film about this man/monster… I’m just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone.”

Mangold added that he’s been “toying with the idea of making some sort of Frankenstein movie” for years before teaming up with James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, and this Swamp Thing movie will be just that.

The director continued to elaborate on the topic and stated that he has no intention of building a cinematic universe for Swamp Thing, he just has a story he wants to tell. He also compares it to RoboCop: “It’s no different than what others do with me; I have no plan for a universe, I’m not building someone to join in some future.

He continued: “Get busy, but I’d just be interested in telling it, I’ve always been interested in doing a version of Frankenstein, basically, and yet I hear: “He’s alive!” enough has been done, but Swamp thing I was always reminded of this wonderful version of the Frankenstein story, very similar to one of my favorite pop films growing up, RoboCop, the original one. This guy waking up and transforming, discovering he’s become a machine, that was something that fascinated me with Logan, obviously.

Mangold went on to say that he likes the idea of creating Swamp thing a “noir, mystery, horror film about a boy who wakes up and is this thing.” He added: “There’s a kind of amnesia of, ‘How did I get here and who did this to me?'”

He added: “So I’m imagining a horror-noir film that follows a creature that can’t be seen, trying to reconstruct, from fragments of memories, what happened and who did it. And none of this goes against Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and all the great work that’s been done… I’m just framing it in a new cinematic context, but it’s everything they were exploring in these comics and so beautifully. “
