In 2013, Kick in the ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow was hired to write and direct a X-Force film for 20th Century Fox. There was some excitement about that film, but it ultimately fell apart and the project was scrapped.
After all these years, Wadlow has revealed some details about the film and what the story would have entailed. A couple of those things involved introducing Deadpool as a villain chasing a ’90s-inspired team of teenagers. Remember, this was three years before Deadpool came out in theaters. During an interview with A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane, the director said:
“I was lucky enough to write an X-Force script for Fox before the original Deadpool movie was made. He had been in Total abomination. I wanted to do it right.”
Wadlow went on to talk about her approach to the story by saying that she would focus on a ’90s-inspired team and the characters she would include in the film:
“My idea for the movie was, ‘If X-Men is about mutants who can go to private school, what about mutants who can go to public school?’ I wrote this movie that was very inspired by the original X-Men series in the ’90s. I introduced Cable as this dark mentor to our characters. It was definitely about the young mutants formerly known as the New Mutants. In my movie, it was Cannonball , Boom-Boom, I aged Domino… Rictor was there. Feral was there.”
He went on to say, “I put them in this road movie. I modeled it on Red Dawn. They were on the run in West Texas.” As for how Deadpool would factor into the story, she shared:
“I wanted this antagonist to be chasing them the whole time. Deadpool was introduced as a villain in the original X-Force series, so I had our main villain hire a mercenary to hire this ragtag group of bad guys and the hired mercenary was Deadpool. He was wearing a biker suit with this red ballistic mask. I made it clear that it would be just like in the comics.”
Wadlow went on to say that he wanted Ryan Reynolds in the part and even got in touch with him and sent him a script, which he said Ryan loved. He added:
“He said it was, like, a great cameo for Deadpool. It was a supporting part. I played him as an antagonist but, in the end, they transformed him.”
Wadlow initially had in mind a “three-movie” story arc that “took X-Force from what it was in the ’90s with Rob Liefeld, with a group of kids fighting for what they believe in, and then, with the third movie, the group would have grown, changed, lost and picked up some new members, and basically turned into Rick Remender’s version of X-Force in the early 2000s.”
This sounds like it would have been a really fun and awesome X-Force movie! It’s a shame it didn’t happen. But, at the same time, if that had happened we might never have had that solo Deadpool movie. So many factors about this X-Force movie could have prevented the movie from being made. But, luckily, everything worked out great and now fans are excited waiting for Deadpool and Wolverine to hit theaters.
You would have loved to see this X-Force is the film being shot?
