WINGS OF FIRE Animated series in development at Amazon MGM Studios

An animated series adaptation of the book series Wings of fire is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. This is a second attempt to develop this story as a series after Netflix previously ordered a 10-episode series with Ava DuVernay as executive producer. This ended up being one of many other Netflix animated projects that was scrapped.

The official plot of the series reads: “Five young dragons were raised in secret, destined by prophecy to end a terrible war. But when one of their own is threatened, they decide to run away and find their destiny, saving themselves and the rest of the world along the way.

The story centers on a bitter war that has raged for generations between the dragon tribes that populate the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to the prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the moment they were born, the dragonets of destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight and Sunny – embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming reach of this savage war that they are destined to end.

There are fifteen books in the Wings of fire book series, which comes from author Tui T. Sutherland. Amazon MGM Studios will assemble an entirely new creative team for the series, but there is currently no writer on board. Marco Resteghini (Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will be the executive producer of the project.

There are 15 books in the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection, with multiple supplemental books and a graphic novel version. First published by Scholastic in 2012, the books have sold more than 27 million copies worldwide and have been on the New York Times best-seller list for more than 240 weeks.

Resteghini previously headed series development at Amazon MGM Studios (then Amazon Studios), but left the company in 2022 amid restructuring. He first joined Amazon in 2014 and during his tenure developed and launched shows such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Jack Ryan” and “The Underground Railroad.”
