Margot Robbie talks about the lines in BARBIE they had to defend and fought to stay in

Barbie was a blockbuster phenomenon that broke all sorts of box office records and gave fans an entertaining cinematic experience unlike anything we’d seen in years. The film was original, funny and thoughtful, and while we know there were edited scenes and story changes along the way to creating the film, the star Margot Robbie recently talked about a couple of lines from the film that she and the director Greta Gerwig I had to fight to stay.

During the annual Producers Guild of America breakfast, which THR attended, Robbie was asked if there were any creative barriers put in place by toy company Mattel about what Barbie could or couldn’t say and do in the Warner Bros. film. She began by recalling questions executives had about the script, including what it meant and when Ryan Gosling AND Simu Liu’s Ken’s versions say they will “displace each other”.

Robbie replied, “‘When they push each other away, what does that mean?’ We said, ‘What do you think that means?'” Robbie said to laughter from the audience, before touching on the film’s final line: “I’m here to see my gynecologist.”

Robbie continued: “Or it could be something like finishing the film online with the gynaecologist, which we were fighting for, for days before blocking the images. That was still a struggle. It was just about choosing hills to die on, I guess, but always having a conversation, no matter what, and being together.

Robbie said that Mattel had to approve the treatment but not the film’s script, which was a challenge because screenwriters Gerwig and Noah Baumbach they typically did not write treatments and were initially reluctant to do so. He also noted that, in the end, everyone had the same goal in mind. Robbie said: “It was never about, ‘We have to fight Mattel.’ We have to fight Warner Bros.’ We’re all in this together and we want to make a great film.”

It was a smart move to let Gerwig and her writing partner Noah Baumbach have the upper hand when it came to the script for this film. They had a vision and it clearly paid off.

Barbie is currently available to stream on Max.
