Director Martin Scorsese was chosen by the director for an upcoming crime film project Julian Schnabel titled In the hands of Dante. Scorsese will play “an elderly sage who influences Dante Alighieri as he writes The divine Comedy.“
Scorsese has appeared in several film projects over the years, many times playing himself. But he played Vincent van Gogh in a segment of Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film Dreams and also provided the voice as the loan shark’s blowfish Shark talewhich is one of his most notable film roles.
Schnabel, who is currently editing the film, said of Scorsese in a statement: “He is extraordinary in the film,” and called Scorsese’s part “a brilliant and important role” and added: “You can’t take your eyes off him.” . .”
It is based on the book by Nick Tosches“which revolves around a manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s poem The divine Comedy which is located in the Vatican Library. The poem goes from a priest to a New York City mob boss, where it is taken by Tosches after being asked to verify its authenticity. Then, like Dante, Tosches embarks on his journey.”
The film’s story is also said to intertwine between the 14th and 21st centuries, with some characters having parallel lives in different eras. One element of the story focuses on Dante as he writes The divine Comedy and its influences.
The director previously said that during the filming of the film he spoke about Scorsese’s character, saying, “I don’t know if he’s a scholar, but he’s someone who knows things.” It is explained that “Guido Cavalcanti, an Italian poet who was also a friend and influential intellectual of Dante Alighieri, sends Dante to Venice to see the essay performed by Scorsese for advice on his journey in The divine Comedy.”
Schnabel added: “It’s a little bit before the poem is finished. So this guy had an influence on Dante, and he’s probably the only one who cared about the review. A few times over a 20 year period, but sort of compressed into a few visits.
