The creative team behind Mrs. Web continues to deny the fact that he made one of the worst comic book movies ever. The way they talk about the movie makes me wonder if they ever sat down to watch it.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently talked about the film and how it was a relief for the creative team to be “freed” from any major ties to Spider-Man. Speaking to Collider, the producer spoke about the decision to leave Spidey out of the story, saying:
“Before I got involved there was a script, and before SJ got involved. We both really saw the benefit of not having the burden of attachment to all these other things that happened. It would be silly to think you don’t give him any homage and no recognition, which we do, but I think it really liberated us in a way to tell a pure story, and so, for both of us, that allowed us to get into what I thought was love for Dakota’s journey.”
“It’s not just, ‘Well, I’m going to get up and be a hero.’ It’s, “I have scars. I don’t want attachment. I definitely don’t want the responsibility for these three people. What the hell is happening to me? I’m going crazy.” And then: ‘What do I do now that I’m in this situation?’ So, for me, freeing ourselves from that obligation, in a way, was very liberating and allowed us to take a more complex turn with the hero.”
Yes, it makes sense to rid the film of Spider-Man, I get it. At the same time, there were connections to Spider-Man in the film, and the way those details were worked into this film was incredibly ridiculous. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what I’m talking about. Honestly, to me, it felt like they hadn’t really released the Spider-Man movie. And even if they feel like they did, it certainly didn’t help the story they told or the script that was farted.
Ugh…this movie actually could have been really good! I honestly believe this could have been a fantastic and unique film, something that set it apart from all the other superhero films made in a good way. Instead, the film stands out from all other superhero films in the worst way.
Early drafts of the script are said to have had Ezekiel Simms planning to kill Mary Parker in an attempt to prevent Peter Parker from being born. The film still includes Mary in Peter Parker’s pregnant story and even makes her her paramedic brother-in-law, Ben Parker, Cassie’s co-worker.
Sony Pictures needs some serious help with their live-action Marvel movies because they have no idea what they’re doing over there.
