Director James Cameron is responsible for bringing us the first two films into a highly profitable and popular environment Avatars franchise, and is working hard to bring us third, fourth and fifth films to complete the story he intended to tell, starting in 2009 with the first film. After a 13-year hiatus, the second film hit screens in 2022, and Cameron made it clear that the third through fifth films would not be as far behind as the second film had been. With the next films scheduled for release in 2025, 2029 and 2031, the director will be 76 years old when the final film hits screens, and it seems like a good stopping point. But according to Cameron, we could see the franchise continue with two more films.
In a recent interview with People, the director explained:
“We’ve finished writing the fifth film and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, although I’ll probably pass the baton at that point. I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We love it. We get to work with great people.”
I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that Cameron could return to direct these films. Martin Scorsese he’s 81 years old and just made another Oscar-nominated film! I think if Cameron keeps the momentum going, it would be silly to bring in another director. He could also simply finish his stories.
At the moment, Avatara3 will be released on December 19, 2025. Avatara4 has a release date of December 21, 2029 and Avatar 5 will be released on December 19, 2031. We’ll just have to wait and see if Avatara6 AND 7 come to fruition.
