Duncan Jones (Moon, Mute, Warcraft) is finally moving forward with his sci-fi animated film project Rogue Soldier, originally announced six years ago. He chose the protagonists of that film, including Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), AND Jack Lowden (Dunkirk).
Other cast members include Jemaine Clement (Eagle vs. Shark), Matt Berry (What we do in the shadows), Diana Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Alice Lowe (Black mirror), Asa Butterfield (Sex education, Enders game), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings), Daryl McCormack (Bad sisters) AND Reece Shearsmith (Salt burner).
Rogue Soldier tells the story of 19, a genetic infantryman, “who finds himself the sole survivor of an invading force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades, the super soldier is accompanied by three teammates killed in action, whose personalities have been preserved in his gun, his helmet and his backpack. Barnard plays the eponymous Rogue Trooper.
The film was created with Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 3D tool, and Jones adapted the film from the comic published by 2000 AD, which is behind comics like Judge Dredd. Rogue Soldier it was created by the artist Dave Gibbons (Guardians, Kingsman) and writer Gerry Finley Day (Dan Dare). Treehouse Digital is creating all the visuals and animations for the film.
Jones said in a statement: “2000 AD offers a very different flavor of comedy action: political and brutal at times, but always with a Pythonesque twinkle in its eye. “Dredd” (2012) was a taste of what 2000 AD has to offer and now we get to show the world another side of the beast. It’s a true privilege to have the opportunity to make ‘Rogue Trooper.’”
Producer Stuart Fenegan said: “Advances in Unreal Engine 5 and the inclusion of the MetaHuman rigs mean that it is now possible to achieve a very high standard of animation on an indie budget. Working with our amazing partners Rebellion, Epic and Treehouse Digital, we are pioneering and developing a new creative pipeline that will enable the independent production of CG animated films.”
Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley, producer of the film, added: “’Rogue Trooper’ highlights Rebellion’s leadership position in the entertainment industry. It was filmed at our dedicated Oxfordshire film studios and combines the beautiful storytelling of our iconic 2000 AD comic book universe with the animation and production technology of the video games industry. We can’t wait for everyone to see these incredible stories come to life on screen.”
Jones had previously spoken about wanting to take on this project, saying: “But I feel like my heart is this, if I were to go in the direction of comics, it would be in the British stuff just because I’m British. So 2000 AD, where Judge Dredd comes from, has an amazing cast of characters and I think if I ever got to play a comic book character, it would probably be one of those.
He added: “Dredd was great, but there are similar things SlaineAND Rogue Soldier, and all these great British characters that are here, people don’t know them. So if I can find a way to get the budget to do one of these, which is hard because they’re not known… They would be great movies, it’s only because they’re not known. How can we make it work? But we’ll see. I’d rather focus on trying to make a character from 2000 AD.”
Rogue Soldier finished principal photography at Rebellion Film Studios in the UK. The film will be completed next year.
