REACHER star Alan Ritchson explains how he “destroyed” his body to play Jack Reacher

Alan Ritchson he’s pretty badass as Jack Reacher on Amazon’s hit series Reacher. He is the perfect actor to play the role and impressively embodies the character’s great physique. But it’s something Ritchson had to work hard to achieve.

During a recent interview with GQ, the actor talked about what he had to go through to reach that physical level, and it turns out he completely destroyed his body in the process. He explained:

“I want to clarify something because in every interview someone says ’30 pounds of muscle’. I put on 15 pounds! I don’t know how much of that was lean muscle. I went from 205 pounds to 235 pounds in eight months, I ate a ton I don’t think all of that was muscle mass. A big chunk of it was – a little more than half, maybe. But I wasn’t taking steroids, I wasn’t taking testosterone. There was only one way to get where I needed to be and that was to work hard. I had fucked up my body. Man. It was too much. I had no time to heal. I was holding something out and thinking, “I don’t care! I’m working on it!” I paid the consequences.”

He went on to explain the consequences that followed, including surgery, he couldn’t breathe properly, and he used up all the testosterone in his body! He said:

“When I’m done [season one], I needed surgery. I couldn’t breathe well. I took a blood test and found out I had no testosterone left [because of overtraining]. My doctor told me, “You need to take testosterone.” [Testosterone therapy] it’s been a real gift because now I can easily maintain that size. My workouts are short and sweet, maybe 30 minutes a day. There’s no doubt that people put a lot of importance on his size, but to me the character is much more than that. The heart of the character really lies in his sardonic sense of humor, which is incredibly fun to play. He’s a smart guy and isn’t afraid to be a smartass. This underlying humor is what gives depth to his character and also entertains the audience.”

Ritchson is currently filming the third season of the series and I’m excited to see this character’s story continue!
