STAR TREK’s Jonathan Frakes to direct post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure series DEATHLANDS

Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes will direct a ten-part series based on the novel and audiobook Lands of death. The series is produced by NextCypher, founded by cryptography pioneer Jeff Garzik. The film is described as “Mad Max: Road Fury meet Yellow jackets in an epic post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure.”

The story is set in “a post-apocalyptic world 100 years after a nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union, where a changed and crazed civilization is beginning to re-emerge.” It follows “Ryan Cawthor and a band of survivors, who travel to the ‘Death Lands’ using teleportation technology they have discovered.”

THE Lands of death The novel series comes from James Axler, first published in 1986. This seems like an exciting project for Frakes to tackle. Although it’s always fun to watch Frakes work Star TrekIt’s nice to see him break away from all that and do something different!

Frakes said in a statement: “One of the things I find so compelling about Deathlands is that it is a series about hope and the possibility of building a better world,” he said. I’m excited for the opportunity to bring this show to the world, combining movie-level action and compelling character drama.”

Mark A. Altman (Pandora, Agent) is the showrunner and executive producer of the series. Tommaso P. Vitale (Slasher, 57 seconds) and Garzik also serve as executive producers.

Altman said: “With a gritty, suspenseful and action-packed series, with a sense of hope, romance and resilience in the face of adversity, I can imagine no one better than visionary director Jonathan to bring Deathlands to the screen. Frakes. I couldn’t be more excited to have him on board to ensure the series becomes appointment television for viewers around the world.”

NextCypher is developing several other projects that include an “earthbound, action-packed, futuristic sci-fi series” titled Looking Glass. They are also developing “different procedures” that “meet the needs of the market.

Speaking about the company and what it plans to accomplish, Garzick said: “I launched NextCypher to capitalize on the appetite for high-quality, innovative genre entertainment. I’m happy to see the market align with our vision of producing exceptional, intelligently budgeted content for a global audience. Deathlands is an ideal launching pad for us, especially considering the success of similar post-apocalyptic series based on successful IPs such as The last of us and the long awaited one Fall.”
