When Simone Rocha enhances the thorns of roses in Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture

Guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring-summer 2024 haute couture collection, Simone Rocha collided her flirtatious and gothic universe with that of fashion’s terrible enfant, Jean Paul Gaultier.

Since his retirement in January 2020, Jean Paul Gaultier has entrusted the reins of his fashion house to a different designer every semester. After Chitose Abe (Sacai), Glenn Martens (Y/Project and Diesel), Olivier Rousteing (Balmain), Haider Ackermann, then Julien Dossena (Rabanne), Simone Rocha has just presented her spring-summer 2024 haute couture collection by Jean Paul Gaultier. .

Known for her flirtatious and gothic aesthetic, the Irish-Chinese designer has managed to fuse her codes with those of fashion’s enfant terrible. The stripes of the sailor shirts of the first are transformed into graceful ribbons knotted with the right amount of looseness, as Simone Rocha loves them so much. The passion for bodices that the two designers share is used to create dresses with a surprising style (a straight or tight bust, a low waist and a very full skirt) or a sailor’s hat.

But it is the use of roses in particular that stands out: when they are not worn individually, in a metallic version preciously in the hands of the models, it is their thorns that transform the famous conical breasts dear to Gaultier. Their pistils also become embroidery details that levitate around the body, like a storm of flowers (they are in fact 2000 pompoms of blood-red dandelion feathers). It is therefore a whole bouquet of thorny flowers and haute couture that Simone Rocha has offered us for Jean Paul Gaultier.
