During a recent interview with Empire, some new details from the film regarding some of these characters were revealed. One of the film’s most important story elements involves Winston, who is now the focus of the crew’s return in the sequel. In fact, he is responsible for the reopening of the New York fire station. Hudson says:
“Winston is a rich guy now and is funding research into new technologies and the science behind eliminating ghosts. When the world is threatened… who will you call? He fits in well with others.”
As for what’s going on with Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, his life is in a very different direction and he’s dealing with some of the changes that Winston is incorporating. The actor said:
“Ray has retired! He has fitness problems, insurance problems: now it’s Winston who decides and decides that Ray should retire from the front line of the Ghostbusters and just be a counselor. Ray doesn’t like this. Gozer is gone, but there’s an equally terrible threat emerging from Queens – across the Indus Valley – and Ray wants to be out there, driving the Cadillac.
As for Bill Muarry returning for the sequel, writer and producer Jason Reitmann She said:
“Bill had always been hesitant [about coming back to Ghostbusters], and for good reason: his level of greatness is very high. But she loves Gil and has an affair with him [on 2008’s City Of Ember]so there was no doubt he would be here [for Frozen Empire].”
Director Gil Kenan then teases that this sequel will be more connected to the original Afterlife films. He says:
“Not a day went by that I didn’t ask myself, ‘How would Ivan deal with this situation?’ I wanted the same approach to character, comedy and fear that he had in the first two Ghostbusters. This feels more connected to those films than Afterlife was.
I’m excited about this new Ghostbusters movie! It will be fun to experiment with this new story and how it unfolds.
In the story, New York City finds itself frozen by an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force! “The Spengler family returns to where it all began, the iconic New York firehouse, to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a top-secret research laboratory to take ghost busting to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the old and new Ghostbusters must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second.second ice age.
