George Carlin’s Daughter Launches New AI-Generated Special Featuring Her Late Father: ‘No Machine Will Ever Replace His Genius’

A new Giorgio Carlin a comedy special was released on YouTube, despite the comedian having been dead for over 15 years. The cleverly titled special George Carlin: I’m happy to be dead!is credited to the AI-generated Dudesy, with Dudesy’s voice introducing the hour-long special comparing it to “Andy Kaufman impersonating Elvis or like Will Ferrell impersonating George W. Bush”.

But George Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, is neither convinced nor amused by the argument. In a statement published this week on X, Kelly Carlin said:

“My father spent a lifetime perfecting his art from his human life, his brain and his imagination. No machine will ever be able to replace his genius. These AI-generated products are clever attempts to recreate a mind that will never exist again. Let the artist’s work speak for itself. Human beings are so afraid of the void that we cannot let what has fallen into it remain there. Here’s an idea, how about we listen to some living human comedians? But if you want to hear the real George Carlin, he has 14 specials that you can find anywhere.

Dudesy is an AI-generated podcast “host” where it learns from existing data to generate and speak on a range of topics. A weekly Dudesy podcast and YouTube show is co-hosted by real humans Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen, who do not appear in the new “Carlin” special.

In George Carlin: I’m happy to be dead!Dudesy introduces the AI-generated stand-up routine by explaining that the jokes will be about “topics that I think would be interested in” [Carlin] today” Topics include mass shootings, transgender rights and billionaires including Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. (Sample “Carlin” observation: “The world teeters closer to the brink of World War III on a daily basis and the American public is debating who can and can’t compete in recreational floating!”)

In an exchange in the response section of her X statement, Kelly Carlin addressed Michael Crane, who hosts a YouTube entertainment channel about wrestling.

“Art is art,” Crane wrote to Carlin. “You are simply trapped in a greedy mindset (others might be too), when not realizing this will simply draw more eyes to your father. You worry about money and not about the diffusion of art.”

Kelly Carlin responded: “I’m worried about his legacy. Her reputation. Her art. I am allowed to do this as her daughter and as long as I am alive. It is important that these companies do not rape or plunder art. Don’t assume you understand who I am and what values I live by.

George Carlin: I’m happy to be dead! is Dudesy’s second comedy special, the first being a stand-up comedy show using the AI-generated voice of former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The special was removed after Brady threatened legal action.

This all seems so ridiculous to me. There are tons of comedians out there to watch, support, and discuss. With YouTube and podcasts we have more content than ever. I miss your favorite comedian, especially one who was so outspoken about social issues, but I think it’s better to move on than pretend I know what they would have said if they were still around. What do you think?
