The exorcist: the believer director David Gordon Green he will not return to direct the sequel, The Exorcist: The Deceiver, for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. The director never seemed to commit to the sequel and after how poorly the first film did, I’m not surprised he’s giving up on the sequel.
When previously asked if he would return to direct the sequel, Green said, “I think the hope is… My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I’ll find myself in that situation.” [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled. But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at the reality of my life as I pivot.
I hear that Green is a little tired of making horror films anyway. So, the producers are now looking for a new director because they are determined to continue making these films.
Universal and Blumhouse acquired the Exorcist franchise rights to a trilogy from Morgan Creek in July 2021 for $400 million, so I guess they must be looking to turn a profit on it. I think it was a bad bet for them. Obviously there isn’t much interest in resurrecting this franchise.
The director is currently directing Ben Stiller in a film called Nutcracker, which follows “work-obsessed Mike (Stiller) who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to care for his four rambunctious grandchildren after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day journey to find foster care turns into weeks of chaos in farm life – and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.
The Exorcist: Believer was originally set for April 18, 2025, but that could change.
