HBO has announced LGBTQ pirate romance series Our flag means death was deleted. The show lasted two seasons and had a huge fan base, following the Stede Bonnet characters, played by Rhys Darby; Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititiand the rest of the incredibly talented ensemble included Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fried, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Against O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen AND Leslie Jones.
A spokesperson for MAX released a statement to THR, saying:
“Even though Max will not move forward with season three of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyful, hilarious and touching stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy and the entire superb cast and crew brought it to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who have embraced these stories and built a wonderful, inclusive community around the show.
The creator of the show, David Jenkinsreleased a heartfelt statement about his beloved project on his Instagram, saying:
Well, I have good news and bad news.
The good news? We spent two seasons in a bizarre, beautifully rendered world populated by some of the greatest actors and creatives around. And the second season was made possible by the enthusiasm of one of the nicest fan communities in the history of this medium. Your voices made the difference, your art made the difference, your audience made the difference in securing OUR FLAG more. Sharing this show with you and watching you make it your own has been a dream come true.
The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG will not return for a third season. We sailed for the pleasure of the good people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this voyage come to an untimely end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee and David Ruby were incredible champions of this show. They allowed us to make something authentically strange and heartfelt, encouraging us all along the way.
I’m very sad to never set foot on the Revenge again with my friends, some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn’t be more grateful that they let me command the damn thing.
Our flag means us. Loving each other, making some pretty weird and beautiful things, and talking about it… like a crew. 🏴☠️🦄🐈⬛💜
It’s really a shame that HBO couldn’t continue the series. Jenkins was just asking for one more season to wrap up his story. The series had excellent ratings. I really don’t know what else they could have asked for. You would have loved to see the third and final season of Our flag means death? Maybe they should buy it from another streamer.
