Nicola Hoult he’s ready to dive even deeper into Lex Luthor’s mind, teasing him The man of tomorrow will test how fans view Superman’s greatest enemy.
The actor first appeared as the iconic villain in James Gunn’S Supermanwhich introduced audiences to the DCU’s cold and calculating Lex Luthor, who was already plotting from behind bars.
While the film ended with Luthor locked up in Belle Reve, fans later saw him make a new deal Peacemaker Season 2. Working with ARGUS Director Rick Flag Sr., Lex agreed to help contain super-powered threats within “Salvation”, a mysterious alternate dimension. As a result, he is now held in a metahuman-free prison, preparing his next big move.
Speaking to GQ, Hoult discussed Gunn’s future The man of tomorrowa film that the director described as being “as much about Lex as it is about Superman”.
“I haven’t read it yet, but I hope to soon, so I can’t say anything else. But as I play the character for the first time in that story, through my research and my preparation, I feel like there’s so much more for me and for us to explore. So I’m excited that we have the chance to go back and do that.”
Hoult also explained what drives him to play such a ruthless and obsessive genius.
“I really like it. I suppose there’s a freedom in playing a villain because there’s nothing you can do that would be wrong. It’s really interesting to try to get into the mindset and psyche of those people, their obsessive nature and their belief system or ideology.”
And it sounds like he’s equally excited to reunite with Gunn for the sequel:
“Also, I loved working with James Gunn. I think he’s a wonderful director, person and creative mind. I just talked to him a week or two ago about the sequel and his idea for it.
“So I’m really excited to play that character again because I feel like there’s a lot to explore with him and expectations to subvert. It’s going to be exciting to step back into those shoes.”
Gunn himself hinted as much The man of tomorrow It will be as much about Lex’s journey as it will be about Superman’s.
“The Man of Tomorrow will not be the same as Superman,” Gunn said last month. “And it’s also Lex’s story, so it’s the two of them. And that colors it in a completely different way.”
Early teaser art for the film shows Superman and Lex fighting side by side, with Luthor dressed in his iconic green and purple warsuit straight out of the comics. The big question now is: what could force these two enemies to ally?
Many fans believe Brainiac will make his DCU debut, a villain Gunn has teased before. If so, ARGUS could release Lex to help him deal with the extraterrestrial threat, leading to an uneasy alliance between the Man of Steel and his greatest nemesis.
The man of tomorrow will arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.
