Director last week David Ayer he said he was done with DC and his Director’s Cut of Suicide squad. Well, he’s still talking about it and says he’d like a one-off “funeral screening” of the film to help him wrap up the story and move on. Clearly, he’s having a really hard time abandoning the project and his experience of what happened to him has really messed him up! During a recent interview with Variety, the director declared:
“This was the hardest part of my career. I made a fantastic film. I made a fantastic film. I’ll put it on record. Someone wants to challenge it: come and look me in the eyes. To have something I put so much love and heart into be taken away, redesigned… you know that Eric Andre meme where he shoots the guy and says, “Why did you do that?” It was like ‘Suicide Squad.’ “Why did you do that?” I did not.
He went on to talk about the criticism he received for the film, saying:
“Every time a new movie comes out in that space, it starts over again. I get attacked for something I didn’t do. It’s pretty unfair, and ultimately, at this point, I get it, it’s corporate America. It is corporate IP. You know these are multi-billion dollar companies, but I think ripping the guts out of a director like that is pretty unfair.
When asked about the possibility of a one-time screening, Ayer said:
“I would love a ‘last rites’ screening. A funeral screening, you know, just getting the cast and crew together to show them what they actually accomplished. It would be fair to everyone.”
I think that’s right. But, if it actually gets to screen that version, WB might as well release it! Ayer previously shared that new DC Studios head James Gunn told him the Ayer Cut “would have its time to be shared,” but who knows if anything will ever come of it.
When previously asked about his biggest heartbreak in Hollywood, Ayer went on to explain it Suicide squad he broke it, saying, “Hollywood – I tell people – is like watching someone you love get fucked by someone you hate. The highlight is “Suicide Squad”. That shit destroyed me. This one kicked my ass. You come straight to ‘Fury’, right? I had the city in my hands: I could have done anything, and I did anything, and [I] embark on this journey with [‘Suicide Squad’]. And the same thing: authentic, truthful, we do all the tests, we really get into each other’s souls. Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then “Deadpool” came out, right? And they never tested “Batman v. Superman,” so they expected a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics. Then it was like, ‘Okay, now we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a damn comedy.’”
Speaking about his original version of the film, the director said: “All I know is that my unseen film works much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut on display feels real and organic. And Gunn told me it was time to share it. He absolutely deserves to launch his own DC universe without further drama over old projects. I’m kind of chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger and dealing with this situation as best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”
Do you think Ayer’s Suicide Squad will ever see the light of day?
