Last week, the first trailer for a Mickey Mouse slasher film titled Mickey’s Mousetrapand is a horror film based on Walt Disney’s version of Mickey Mouse The steamboat Willie.
The movie doesn’t look good at all, but it was obviously made for a quick cash grab. In the movie, “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck in the arcade on last shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them that she must survive.”
The film’s creators, director Jamie Bailey and producer Simon Phillips, recently spoke about the film and were surprised to be the only ones to take advantage of Steamboat Willy entering the public domain. Phillips told DisInsider:
“We were very surprised to be the only ones working in this direction. We thought we were going to get lost in the shuffle, to be honest… we won the lottery.”
Baily went on to talk about the potential they saw in the R-rated Mickey Mouse slasher and say they are Disney fans, but believe many people would love to watch Mickey brutally kill people.
“We’re actually big fans of Disney in general, not just Disney reinvented in horror movies or something… so this is just our opportunity to be playful and creative with the character. And that’s exactly what we did. We had a ridiculous idea and made it happen. Who doesn’t want to see Mickey Mouse kill people?”
I would say they aren’t doing anything creative with this movie. This is a slasher film, the plot is something we have seen over and over again. The only difference is that the killer is wearing a Mickey Mouse mask.
You know what would be creative and interesting? If someone actually made a super fun and interesting Mickey Mouse movie, it would put what Disney is currently doing to shame.
