Patrick Stewart he talked about wanting to make a new one Star Trek: Picard films since the series ended on Paramount+. He explained that he is pushing for a final film that will reunite the crew for another adventure.
Stewart shared a few months ago, “I think we could make a movie, a movie based on Picard. Now not necessarily about Picard but about all of us. And take a lot of these wonderful elements, particularly from the third season of Picard,” and it I pull out what I think would be an amazing film. I keep telling people and mentioning it, and so far there hasn’t been any enthusiastic response, but it could very well happen. And I think that would be a very appropriate way to say, ‘And goodbye folks.'”
Looks like Stewart will get what he wants! Recently confirmed that a new Star Trek the movie with Picard is currently in development! While guesting on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said:
“I only heard last night about a [movie] screenplay that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick [Stewart], to play with it. And I was told to expect to receive it in about a week. I’m so excited because it feels like the kind of project where the experimentation I want to do will be essential to this kind of material. It’s fine at 83…”
This interview took place in November 2023, so if what Stewart says has moved forward, then he currently has the script for the film. Stewart was previously asked about the Star Trek film and he explained what he hoped to achieve with Jean-Luc Picard in another final film. He said:
“Well, it would be: Let’s explore the inside of this man’s head further. His fears, his anger, his frustration, his questions about all these things. There’s a moment, I’m not quite sure where it goes in the series… Well, there are two moments. One is when Picard doesn’t know what to do. He’s perplexed. And we’ve never seen that in The Next Generation. There’s also a moment when he’s really scared. And these two suggestions alone, I think we’ll make him an interesting study for another film.”
We have no other information or details about what the story entails, but this is the first time Stewart has explicitly said that a Star Trek movie project is in the works, which is pretty exciting! It will be great to see how this Star Trek movie takes Picard’s story forward, and I hope to see him reunite with his folks Next generation family.
