At the end of October comes the sunniest and most gripping premiere of the year: the action adventure “Major in Dubai” starring the everlasting Pavel Priluchny. The “Major” series grows in the form of films and TV series and always surprises with new surprises. Although it seemed many times that the story had run its course, writers found new excuses to continue our century’s knight errant.
The Fashion Vibes’s editors attended the closed premiere on October 23 and were able to conclude from the stormy reaction of the audience that the great work was, is and will be with us for years to come. Read more about the guests on the red carpet in our social recap, but for now we’ll tell you how Igor Sokolovsky’s trip to the UAE turned out.
If the hero had previously tried to understand himself, his childhood, and his relationships with women, this time he found himself a little out of focus, which worked to the benefit of the story. The leitmotif was male friendship.
His assistant, Vanya Sokolov, played by Pavel Chinarev, decides to get rich in crypto and goes to Dubai to save money for a lavish wedding with Vera. At first, he blows up the internet with viral videos about how to raise money. The duo of Dubai bloggers telling stories about rich Russians were particularly hilarious; luckily we will see them more than once.
But the market crashes and yesterday’s favorite becomes persona non grata, forced to hide from angry debtors. Chases and clashes begin. The contrast between the elite areas of Dubai and the slums where ordinary people live is particularly striking. Igor Sokolovsky will hide here until he gets on the first plane to save the unfortunate man from trouble.
But in the United Arab Emirates, no one is waiting for Sokolovsky: his friend turns him away, saying that he will not accept money. It seems like it’s not about principles and trying to prove something to yourself, it’s about jealousy. And on both sides. One of them is jealous of the major’s carelessness, and he turns pale when he realizes that his personal life is not going well. The explanations are not limited to verbal duels.
True, Priluchny’s hero is in no hurry to give up, but continues to think and at the same time taste the delights of Dubai life. This is how the stranger meets Rita. One might think that an exciting romantic streak awaits us, but no, even in private life what worries Sokolovsky the most is why his friend rejected him. And in general, throughout the whole story two cruel men say: “Yes, I love you!” She will behave like offended, jealous women with her soul, which will cause more than one smile.
The romantic line is not interesting in itself, but is merely a catalyst for the plot.
Rita is connected to the same “dangerous people” who blackmailed her friend into fighting a local social media star, a ruthless investor whose house is full of gold bullion. It is his house that the crooks want to rob with the help of Russian Vanya.
What is interesting is that the conflict action in the spirit of “Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning”, which was shot in the same locations, suddenly turns into a heist movie at one point. Yes, we will see how Pavel Priluchny drives supercars in the desert, but the funniest part begins when the heroes start digging under their enemies. In search of incriminating evidence, they sneak into the hotel, where a funny scene awaits us at the pool. In general, in such scenes you forget that this is a Russian film: in terms of locations and atmosphere, the situations seem to be taken from “Ocean’s Eleven” or “The Hangover”. The main villain in the person of Vincent Kiefer is like Mr. Smith from The Matrix.
There are also nods to “Brother,” but they choose to subordinate the film (if that applies to sequels). It’s a shame to love Balabanov, but it’s sad to see stories based on the same formula: but here the main character is the main character, and he comes not to America, but to the United Arab Emirates to save a friend who was also abandoned by bad people, and now he must fight in the ring. Last year, with Alena Mikhailova and Yura Kolokolnikov, the series “Amura” was released, in which the hero goes the way of Danila Bagrov: only he is engaged in boxing and saves his sister in Japan with the help of a former Russian boyfriend.
The live view of Dubai is impressive. From the advertising posters, we saw the panoramic view of the Burj Khalifa and the beaches, as well as the lives of ordinary people. And in such corners life is in full swing. Chinarev’s hero reminds his older friend that even if they don’t live in skyscrapers, these are people too. And we also see this hidden dignity in the inhabitants of run-down houses, which provoked the reaction of the Russian people.
Of course, “Major” is an entertaining movie that does not claim any philosophy, but there are still some very touching moments, such as the duet between a father-boxing coach and his son (Abdullah Bin Haider and Edham Elridi) between races and penalty shoot-outs. These seemingly insignificant characters, like the Dubai bloggers who covered the fight with Abdullah (Aslan Guchetl), added warmth to the story.
