Gary Oldman is not a big fan of his portrayal of the wizard Sirius Black in the film Harry Potter Franchise.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the latest edition of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Oldman claims that his work in the role has been mediocre in the three films he’s made in the series.
Oldman debuted as Sirius Black in 2004 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He returned for the next two films, which ended in 2007 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
“I think my work is mediocre,” Oldman claims. “No, I will do it. If I had read the books like Alan (Rickman, aka Prof. Snape), if I had been ahead of the game, if I had known what to expect, I honestly think I would have played it differently.
Oldman is his own worst critic.
“I’ll tell you what it is.” It’s like anything: if I look at myself and say, “My God, I’m great,” it will be a very sad day because you want to do the next thing better.
At a previous appearance on The Drew Barrymore ShowThe actor explained that he was cast as Sirius Black after becoming a single father.
“When I was 42, I woke up divorced and overseeing these guys, and that in itself was difficult because there was a change in the industry where a lot of the productions were happening. [filmed in]It was Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia, you know, all these places.
Oldman said he “turned down a lot of work” to be with his children. “Thank God for that harry potter, he told Barrymore. “I tell you, the two – Batman (where he played Commissioner Gordon) and Harry Potter – really, they saved me because it meant I could work for the least money for the most money and then be at home with the kids.
Oldman is busy promoting his spy show on Apple TV+ slow horses, The third season just ended. Season 4 of the series has already been filmed, starring Oldman as spymaster Jackson Lamb.
