Director Gina Prince-Bythewood has signed on to direct the adaptation of the popular YA action fantasy novel Children of blood and bone, by writer Tomi Adeyemi, who wrote the original screenplay. Prince-Bythewood will develop the next version of a draft written by the author.
“The action fantasy novel follows heroine Zélie Adebola, who belongs to a class of magic practitioners known as maji, as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha, following the class’s brutal repression of her people kosidáns manager.”
Prince-Bythewood recently directed the historical epic The Woman Kinghero Viola Davis as the leader of the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s, as well as the hit Netflix film The Old Guardwith Charlize Theron AND KiKi Layne. Also includes Prince-Bythwood’s acclaimed filmography The secret life of bees, Beyond the lights AND Love and basketball.
Children of blood and bone and its sequel Children of virtue and revenge, both of which debuted at No. 1 on the NY Times bestseller list, are published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, a Macmillan imprint. The third and final book of the trilogy, entitled Children of anguish and anarchywill be published on June 25, 2024.
