Denis Villeneuve recently offered an update on Dune 3 which he confirmed he had developed several months ago. Now he has revealed that the script is being written and that it is almost finished.
Speaking to the South Korean press, Villeneuve said Messiah of the dunes is “being written right now. The script is almost done but it’s not finished. It’s going to take some time… There’s a dream of making a third film… it would make total sense to me.”
However, this is a project he will not commit to doing later. He made the first two Dune movies back to back and wants to take a break and do something else before returning to the world of Dune for the third time.
Villeneuve said: “I don’t know exactly when I will return to Arrakis. I might take a detour first just to get away from the sun. For my sanity I could do something in between, but my dream would be to go to this planet I love one last time.”
the director previously discussed his plans for a third film, saying, “There’s the second Dune book, The Messiah of Dune, from which an extraordinary film could be born. I always thought there could be a trilogy; later, we’ll see. They are years of work; I can’t imagine going any further.”
When it comes to others Duna: second part, the director said: “For me this film is much better than the first part. There’s something more alive about it. There is a relationship with the characters. I was trying to achieve an intensity and quality of emotion that I hadn’t achieved with Part One and that I had achieved with Part Two. I’m not saying the film is perfect, but I’m much more satisfied with the second part than the first. I can’t wait to share it with fans and viewers.”
Villeneuve also described the sequel as “more muscular” than the first installment, saying: “The first film was more meditative and contemplative. We were following a young man as he discovered a new planet, a new culture. The second film…is more of an action film than the first part. He’s more muscular.
Dune is a mythical and emotionally charged hero’s journey and tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), “a brilliant and gifted young man born with a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to secure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence – a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential – only those who can conquer their fear will survive.”
The next chapter of the story will explore the “mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he joins Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of vengeance against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Faced with the choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he attempts to prevent a terrible future that only he can predict.”
Duna: second part will be released on March 1, 2024.
