There was talk of a possibility Peaky Blinders movies from before the Netflix series ended with its sixth season. It’s been a few years since there’s been any kind of update on this possible project, but during Variety’s recent interview on Actors on Actors, Margot Robbie asked the star of the series Cilian Murphy if there was a spin-off movie, and says that’s something he’d be open to if it were to happen. He said:
“I mean, I’m open to the idea. I always thought if there was more story to tell…”
Robbie, who is a huge fan of the show, then responded enthusiastically:
“Of course there’s more story to tell! You rode away! Like, now what?”
The question is: will there really be a Peaky Blinders movie? A movie has been creator Steven Knight’s plan since the beginning, and when he spoke about it previously, he said:
“Covid has changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a film. This is what will happen.”
Knight later offered the following update:
“We’re in development. It’s a completely defined idea and it has a beginning, a middle and an end. And I think it will be a fitting conclusion to the story that’s been told so far, but there will be things from it that I don’t know.” I actually call them spin-offs, but there will be other TV shows that I hope will come out of [it]which will continue to tell the story of this part of society and this family.”
While Knight wants to make that movie, we have no idea when or if he’ll actually get it made. Knight is currently working with Lucasfilm and is writing the screenplay for the Rey Skywalker film. He is also developing a gritty ska drama series set in the 1980s called This city.
Peaky Blinders follows the story of Tommy Shelby (Murphy) and his infamous family’s rise to power against the backdrop of post-war working-class Birmingham. Here is the synopsis:
Britain is a mixture of desperation and hedonism in 1919, in the aftermath of the Great War. Returning soldiers, newly minted revolutions and criminal gangs are fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. One of the most powerful gangs of the time are the Peaky Blinders, led by war hero Thomas Shelby and his family. But Thomas has bigger ambitions than just running the streets. When a crate of weapons goes missing, he recognizes an opportunity to advance in the world because crime may pay, but legitimate business pays better. Trying to free Britain from its crime is Inspector Chester Campbell, who arrives from Belfast to try to achieve this goal.
