Bruce Campbell has appeared in a few Marvel films throughout his career… at least in all the Marvel films directed by Sam Raimi. He has small cameo appearances in Raimi’s three Spiderman movies and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When Raimi was developing his scrap Spider-Man 4 project, Campbell would have played Mysterio, which would have been fun to see!
During an interview with CB, Campbell was asked about the fan theory that he is a version of Mysterio in the Marvel universe and his response was:
“You’re assuming I know something about Marvel lore, and I appreciate that. I watched Doctor Strange in a theater and thought, ‘What the hell are they talking about?’ And then there was a guy who was kind of an assistant, and I was talking to him about this, and I said, ‘Man, there’s a lot of words, a lot of dialogue,’ and he said, ‘Oh, no, NO . I needed all this. I needed to know all this. I’m so grateful for that movie.’ And I’m like, “OK, man.” So yeah, I don’t know.”
Campbell then confirmed that his cameos in these Marvel films are all the same character and are all connected across the multiverse. He also said that he is in talks with Marvel about returning to the MCU:
“The cameos are like in the Spider-Man movies: if you know anything about the multiverse, you know that, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse because of Doctor Strange. I’m not a pizza salesman, okay? It would be a grave mistake to think that I’m alone a pizza seller, an usher, an announcer or a maître d’. It’s called the multiverse, my friend. So, yes, it’s the same character, but we don’t know who he really is. It hasn’t been revealed yet. I just got off the phone with the Marvel guys, and we’re close to finding out.”
It’s cool that Marvel is actually trying to explore this idea with Campbell and it will be really interesting to see how they continue to play with and explore Campbell’s character. When asked if Mysterio may return from the same universe as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, he replied, “I can neither confirm nor deny.”
Perhaps his character will be revealed to be the real Kang the Conqueror!
